Run Your Age! How old are you this year?

Ah, I love a good numerical coincidence or goal to geek over.  I stumbled across this article in the Guardian this week and it's really struck a chord with me on so many levels.  Basically it suggests the idea that you could celebrate your birthday by running the distance to match your age.  You choose, either km or miles.

Sounds good so far, good goal to add to my 2018 list....

I turn 42 this year.  Being perfectly honest about my running ability, I'm not close to being capable of running 42 miles anytime soon (but never say never...) but 42km.... I went away to check what that would be in mileage as I'm an imperial unit runner 😄

I couldn't believe it when I realised that 42km is actually just over 26 miles!  A marathon!  Arrgh - that's a funny coincidence that I happened to read this article, in this year, when my age = marathon.

It's a sign I need to run a marathon this year isn't it?  It doesn't get much clearer than that.

It wasn't one of my goals to be honest, I quite like round numbers when it comes to running distance goals and I had 20 miles as my long distance goal this year.

I actually can't imagine really ever feeling enthused about running a major road race marathon event.  Too many crowds, too much tarmac, too much organisation - just not my style of running at all.

But I'd happily look for a smaller, low key event, preferably on easy trails - or, I'd be happy organising a 26 mile run myself and just going after it.

I've had It's Grim Up North running events on my radar for a little while and they organise local trail runs along canal paths and trails, at distances of 10k, half marathon, 20 miles, marathon and ultra, all low key, no whistles or bells and at a reasonable entry price.

So this will very much be a 'later this year' plan.  I'm still clawing my way back from illness and had a very tough 10 mile run this morning.  I need to speak to a few of my running pals who I hope to drag with me, especially those who turn 42 this year!

Who can resist this goal of running your age?  I absolutely love this idea and I really think I need t make it happen.

Please do get in touch if you'd like to join me - either physically, or from a distance.

  1. That’s a great goal (and the distance in km is very convenient for an organised event!). I happen to have a “significant birthday” this year so I’ll have to think about how to mark it...

What about January? Month review: Running, eating, adventure planning...

So I guess it's not unusual for January to NOT go to plan?  My non-January wasn't through poor choices, more around unfortunate events - mostly health related.  I've prided myself of being super healthy and resilient to bugs throughout 2017, I guess they had to catch up with me eventually! I was struck down with a viral infection mid month and this lead to a secondary bacterial infection which absolutely floored me and left me in bed for the best part of three weeks.  But after some amazing NHS care and some strong drugs, I'm clawing my way back to health now and I'm ready to pick up the pieces of January's shattered goals! RED January - I ran 21/31 days in January which is a pretty poor show in terms of a monthly running streak!  This was about the 4th time I've done a monthly running streak and the first time I've failed to run every day.  I can honestly say, I missed no runs through choice.  I don't feel the need to 'go back' and run ...

Happy January! Happy 2018! Happy Running! Happy Cooking! Intro....

I've been absent from the world of blogging for more than two years.  I spend so much time outside running and form so many blog posts in my mind as I run, but I never make them happen.  Guess what.. my main goal for 2018 is to blog and get my ideas down and in some kind of order.  So here we are.   I ran 1246 miles in 2017.  I hadn’t set out at the start of the year to do this – in fact quite the opposite.   I refused to commit to a similar yearly target when my friend suggested we run 1000 miles in 2017 – the thought of it was too overwhelming and I didn’t think I could get anywhere near a monthly average of 100 miles per month.  I’d been running for four years, having taken it up in my late 30s.  I tended to average 300-500 miles each year.  At the end of 2016, I discovered ‘run streaking’ where you commit to run every day for a set period of time- in my case 1 month at a time.  This really boosted my ...
